The inclusion of games as integral part of any language syllabus provides an opportunity for intensive language practise, offers a context in which language is used meaningfully and as a means to an end, and acts as a diagnostic tool for the teacher, highlighting areas of difficulty. All discussion has tended to focus on methodological considerations, one of the most important reasons for using games is simply that they are immensely enjoyable for both teacher and student.

Thus, in order to get every lesson full of enthusiasm and energy, teachers are required to prepare humorous and fun activities, interactive methods, unique techniques. Here are given some educational games and materials for its procedure.  Most of the activities can be done in 15-20 minutes. For those odd ocassions where it may be possible for an activity to go on and on, it is advisibale to set a time-limit and to stop students whether they have finished or not. Apart from the obvious difficulties of students finishing at different times, the checking process is often an integral and from the learning point of view, important part of the activity. As such, it is better that you check with individual groups.

1.      Tongue twisters help students’ pronunciation. Also a lot of fun can be had from trying to read out tongue-twisters. This is a group contest based on tongue-twisters.

Method:

Copy and cut out the tongue-twister cards which you prepared for each group. The tongue-twister cards are shuffled and placed face down on the table. One player starts. She/he picks up the card and tries to say it three times as quickly as possible. If the others think she/he has said it well she/he keeps the card. If not, the person on his/her right has a go. If successful she/he keeps the card. If not play proceeds until everyone in the group has tried. If no one is successful at the end, the card is discarded and the next one turned up. Play continuous in this manner. Set a time-limit.(approx. 15minutes).  The person with the most cards at the end wins.

2.       Make two words. In this activity for pairs or groups the letters which form end of one world also form the beginning of another word, e.g. fo—od—our

Method :  Before starting, write the following on the board: SW__AGE      RI__OICE

Point to the first one (SW__AGE) and ask the class if they can think of two letters which form the end of the first word and also form the beginning of the second one. (Answer: IM…Swim/image). Do the same with the second one (Answer: CH… Rich/choice).

Now divide the class into pairs(or groups of three).Give each of them handout that you prepare to the lesson. Tell them not to turn  back or look at the folded part of the handout yet. Do the first one with the whole class, to make sure they understand what they have to do. (woman — answer). Tell them they now have 5 minutes to fill in as many of the others as they can. After 5 minutes, stop them and tell them to turn over the folded part of the handout. Explain that these are the missing pairs of letters. Give them 5 more minutes to complete the task. Check orally, by asking  various pairs/groups for their answers. NOTE: If they have come up with their own pairs of letters which fit, then allow these.

Folded part:  Se, ch, st, en, le, ra, ap, on, at, re, ot, in, am, ow, an, ty

3.      Memory Game “What is in the suitcase? This game is for getting students improved grammatically and factually correct by working at their memory (You can use your own  picture).

Method:

Divide the class into small teams or two or three players and appoint team secretaries. Give the teams two minutes to study the picture and then ask them to cover the picture so it cannot be seen. The team secretaries, helped by the other players in their team, then have to write down what in the suitcase. They must not look at the picture while doin this. Each team then reads out their   list of sentences. The team with the most correct sentences is the winner. Alternatively, score two points if the sentences are both grammatically and factually correct, one point if only factually correct. The team with the most points is the winner. Here is the answer board:
